what to do in this situation.

hmm i am loyal to amd, but i also want performence, it really hard to say, i do waan try out the ati3870's i love nvidia and i am a really a fanboy when it comes to them lol, but i wana try something new, and i like the idea of teh spider platform lol, i kno its just a marketign scheme, il see if by monday they have any over clockign reviews on the 9600, and how it performs. and if there is a spider platform vs intel/nvidia. comparisons.

I suggest getting straight down to basics. Ditch the crossfire/SLI idea and cut down on your $250 dollar budget for a motherboard (way too much to spend on a mobo IMO). You can also tone down that PSU and if you go Intel, you can still go Quad, for cheaper, and even get the best performer :)

Another thing is, I know you're probably buying from NCIX because that shipping seems quite expensive. Go to DirectCanada.com, Canadacomputers.com or Infonec.com, they offer much better deals for shipping, some free, some flat-rate. btw, use shopbot.ca to help you out too.

I'm really not to sure exactly what you need to upgrade/transfer from your old build, or what exactly your situation is, but I've just replaced the parts from your initial post and noticed you were also interested in the 8800GT, here's what I suggest:

CPU: Q6600 ~$280

Mobo: IP35-E or DS3L ~$90-$100

GFX: 8800GT ~$250 (although, if you're patient enough, I strongly suggest waiting for the GTS G92 Revision, almost Ultra-performance for $300-$350 - coming December 3rd!)

PSU: Corsair VX550 ~$75 more than enough to run such a setup

Pocket the rest of the money and enjoy it on something else. Avoid the raptors and raid too, those are just not neccesary when you're a 17/18 year-old student on a budget. Remember if you want raid and SLI/crossfire, not only will you have to pay for a second hard drive and/or second video card, but your motherboard will also be more expensive, and IMO, it's not worth the investment for whatever increase in performance it may give. I'm on the same boat as you man. Just forget the gimmicks and think about the core parts and how you can balance them into a decent budget. and don't spend more than $100 on a case either, even less than that, like $80. Get an NZXT Alpha or Apollo, or an Antec 900, and as much tech-forums people suggest the Ballistix, we just don't always get the same deals here in Canada for some reason, some OCZ Plats can be extremely cheap, but if you find a deal on the Ballistix, take em for sure

i allready own the raptors in raid lol, anyway im going amd9600 now after reading the still bogus reviews, i was quite surprised by toms hardware to run it on am2 not am2+ mobo, and there is only a 13.5% decrease in performence on the 9600 but thats with am2 if i can close the gap a litle with am2+ il be glad. the balistix are cheaper then the ocz plat on ncix. so here is what ive got for an upgrade

just oen question is shiping insureance really nessacery?

it will be if something gets lost or the mailman steals your phenom out of envy. did i mention IM the mailman? lol.
you realize that last year i built a rig with an x2 4200 that cost just about the same as this.
amazing.
wow thats crazy how much you said the MSI mobo was there. its 179 bucks here. the gigabyte is 169.

well, i never really liked 'insurance' as a concept, however, I'd hate to have my shipment lost or damaged and I'd have no one to go to, I just lose $1200, $1800 just like that, for the few extra dollars, sure they're screwing ya, but, it's a good sense of security to have

as for your build, if I were in your shoes, I'd just sell that entire rig and build anew, ditch Vista and stick with XP for now and that $1500 rig that you made just seems like a lot of fluff for nothing:

well, cheers to that. it will perform just fine man. it will be fast and whatnot. but dont be surprised if it falls behind the q6600, cos it probably will in certain areas.
