Several people have got their 920s to around 4GHz but if this is your first time I would proceed with caution. The GTX260 is a pretty nice card but you could do better for the money. What is your budget?

$1500 give or take
if i need liquid cooling i might be able to spend more money
i read a tutorial from gigabyte for a i7 920 @4ghz on one of their ex58 extreme
not sure if i should follow that or if i can get other expert advice

People have gotten the i7 920 clocked to 4Ghz on air cooling. Just get a good heatsink like the Thermalright True 120 and take the overclocking slow .. in increments. Your safest bet would be liquid but it shouldn't be necessary if you have the proper cooling in your case & good heatsink.

Bah, That sucks. Would the "True" be the best i7 hsf? Or is there other better options?

Sorry for taking your thread. Just didn't want to start a new one for no reason.

Here are the major components I would buy to hit 4GHz

Newegg.com - Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

Newegg.com - EVGA E758-A1 3-Way SLI (x16/x16/x8) LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

Newegg.com - OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Low Voltage Desktop Memory Model OCZ3G1600LV6GK - Desktop Memory

Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Power Supplies

This is the best heatsink Newegg has for the i7 (in my humble opinion).
Newegg.com - Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.B CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks
and you'll need at least one fan but you can buy (2) for a push-pull configuration.
Newegg.com - SILVERSTONE FM123 120mm Case Fan - Case Fans
and here's some good thermal paste.
Newegg.com - Tuniq TX-2 Cooling Thermal Compound - Thermal Compound / Grease

If you want the True Heatsink you can buy it here.
Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme-1366 RT Rev. C CPU Heatsink (Socket LGA 1366) - FrozenCPU.com

The True is a Great Heatsink but Lapping is required to get the most out of it.

FrozenCPU Deluxe Heatsink Lapping Kit - FrozenCPU.com

And here's some i7 overclocking info

Default ;)

People have managed to accomplish the overclocking of an i7 to 4GHz on air cooling - I am a newbie to overclocking too (been doing it 3 months, that is a newbie - isn't it?) but use liquid cooling on most 'tasks' I take out.

Comes down to preference I suppose - and budgets :/.

I have two i7 920 systems, both @ 4.2GHz, cooled by air
