Wouldn't the 9600 GT handle a 17" monitor?

yes it would. but with only 64sp it does not have much to spare.

Easily.. my HD 3850 does it fine.. and I max out Far Cry 2/Oblivion/Halo 2/COD4 [on Ultra High or w/e its called]

my 8500gt could max out oblivion halo 2 cod4 at 1680x1050 but i got about 20-25fps. far cry 2 is easy to max out.

8500gt max out oblivion... i dunno about that one.. my 7900gt couldnt do that with 1280x1024...

It CAN max it out at 1600x1000. Whether it gets good frame rates or not...... that can be debated.
