ok guys, im looking to either make a custom PC or go for an iMac. 2000 dollars is my max.

i'd prefer a custom PC because PC's are compatible with alot more programs, i've used them my whole life, and it seems like they are cheaper (may just be because i dont know Apple figures). I dont much care for the mac OS (but if its that much better, im sure i can get used to it), plus, they arent very upgrade friendly hahah, and they're also quite a bit more expensive, but i'm also aware that they are regarded as the editing king hahah.

ssoooooo, what do you guys think would be my best option for a computer that will be able to do heavy video and photo editing, while also being able to be used for "normal" computer stuff.

thanks guys and i look forward to being part of the community = ].

also, thats 2000 dollars with speakers and monitor in the cusom's case. so like.....1500 on just the computer part.

Definetly go with a PC...

$2000 limit...you can pretty much buy near top of the line on everything. For photo editing...get a nice graphics card (just good to have)...2GB or more of RAM... Really not too expensive. Just go to one of the infamous sites, and look around!

Also, get a nice mouse. The MX1000 is great for photo editing, just because of it's size/weight, moving pixels at a time is a breeze.

I dunno...lol, like I said, with 1500 to spend on the computer, you'll have no problem getting the top notch performance.

thanks for the feedback. unfortunatly i know just about nothing when it comes to this kind of stuff. it would definitily help me alot if you could be a bit more specific = ].

i've come to the conclusion that im going to get a AMD 64 X2 4200 cpu, but i dont know what a good motherboard would be for this cpu. matter of fact, i dont even know if this cpu would be good for video editing lol.

also, when i say video editing, i mean some pretty heavy editing hahah. anyways, any help would be much appreciated = ]

Alright, i decided to drop the monitor idea. i have a flat screen already and if i want to upgrade later to a flat panel, i can, its not a huge deal, so my computer budget without speakers is around 1700-1800!

::::EDIT::::

ok, heres what i came up with so far. i have NO IDEA AT ALL if any of this is good for video editing, or if it it will all fit in the case and not overheat. PLEASE GIVE ME FEEDBACK! = ].

Well, if your going to be doing heavy video editing, what editing suite are you going to use? If you were to use Premiere Pro (which supports SMP) you would definately take advantage of a dual core. Also your going to need at least 2gb of ram, and some fast hard drives in a RAID. That will make the whole process much painless when you are packing all of the above.

But i cant help you with the motherboard. I really dont want to put any opinions in on an AMD setup.

MSI K8N NEo4-F
amd athlon 64 x2 4400+
corsair valueselect 2GB
2x74GB raptor plus a 250GB seagate barracuda sata150 hdd
i guess you dont need a flashly case, you shuold look into the thermaltake soprano
antec neoHe 550W power supply
eVGA 7800 GT :O

ok, i posted a setup that i kinda threw together in the above post before seeing your guy's replies. i will definitly be using premiere pro. and i guess i picked well with the cpu = ]. will all three of those HDD's fit inside the comp? im not exactly sure how they hook up, so sorry if its a stupid question = \. i will go and try PZEROFGH's setup and see what the cost is and come back = ].

thank you guys a ton for all the help.

ok, PZEROFGH's setup is just a tiny, tiny bit pricy, but thats no big deal. the only things i found odd was that theres no sound card (which i think is needed for the speakers i want to get) and the video card is a really nice one (i think, its 400 dollars compared to the 60 dollar one i picked lol). on another forum i asked for help on, one of the people said that a really nice video card wasnt needed for video editing. was he wrong?

yes most cases you can fit 4 hdds at least, and you shuold raid the two raptors and keep the last one as storage, or go cheaper and just buy one raptor with one big hdd

that build just sucked lol.

fx5500?@?@ with a DFI nF4 SLi-DR !??!?! and you need to buy artic silver 5 AS5 to put on your heatsink /cpui

3 HDD's will fit depending on your case size...check your case specifications for how many 3.5" internal bays. As far as connecters, you should not have a problem...with any modern motherboard...:)

GET A DECENT POWER SUPPLY

stock heatsink is fine if you arent goign to OC that much
