Default Video card upgrade question

Ive been recently experiencing lag and slowdown in some games Ive been playing and was thinking on upgrading my video card.

My current card is a GeForce 7950GT. Apparently a well priced upgrade would be the GeForce 8600 GTS. What I dont understand is the 7950 has 512mb of ram, and the 8600 runs only half that. So how is it an upgrade?

Thanks

Its not.

Graphics card Rankings

More Vram does not necasarily mean better performance but combined with other factors it makes the 8600 slower. I don't think its a huge differance but theres no point in a slight downgrade.

Whats your budget?

Anything reasonable really, just not too over the top.

My current setup is:

2.60 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
3 gig ram
And of course the GeForce 7950 GT

Edit: Im also running xp sp3 forgot to mention that

Well its kind of hard to know what you consider reasonable but the popular choice right now is the ATI Radeon 4850 which is about $150 - $200 after MIR depending on the company you choose.

Your card is a PCI-E slot card right?

I'm in the same situation kind of. I'm thinking about getting a new GPU, because my 7950gt isn't holding out anymore. A 4850 would be a great GPU, good value for the money.

GeForce 9600 GT SLI Performance

Apparently 9600 GT SLI was only worth it because of the 30% retail difference between the 8800 GT and the 9600 GT. But the 9600 GT in SLI NEVER out performed the 8800 GT in SLI.

Yeah but it doesn't out perform it.

In that case 9600 GSO's in SLI or 4670's in Crossfire is a GREAT deal as well.

Especially with some mild over clocking.
