Default Video card questions

I'm torn. I'm seriously thinking about buying a Radeon 6990, but I game on a 23" monitor. I am thinking a GTX 580 might be a cheaper alternative, especially since I don't plan on using more than one monitor, and I don't game at monster resolutions. Still, I am torn. My main goal is to be Skyrim and BF3 ready. Differing perspectives would be very welcome.

Well, what cpu/motherboard do you have?

The 580 is more than enough for gaming.

Is it the 2600 or the 2600K?

With a single monitor a GTX 580 should be plently. If you have the 2600K and you think your frames are low then you can OC the cpu to gain a decent boost. And if you still need more frames you can OC the card also.

It is the 2600. I wish I had ponied up the extra cash for the 2600k but oh well.

I would stick with the GTX 580, you'll just bottleneck the 6990 at stock 2600 speeds. You'll probably be bottlenecking the GTX 580 a little at stock speeds.

I never thought about bottlenecking the 2600, but I suppose that's a real possibility. After looking at my build, do you have any suggestions as to where I should put the money I saved by going with the 580?

Get an SSD. It'll boost things noticably.

I'm going to set up Intel Smart Response with an OCZ Agility 3 60 GB SSD.

580 is definitely the better choice.
