Upgrading monitor, system performance go down? (also monitor suggestion :P

Have not been here for a while, figured I would post it up.

Current specs: E6420 @ clock speeds, 2GB DDR2, and an 8800GT. Basically looking at upgrading to the 23 or 24" monitor with 1920x1080/1920x1200. Looking to see what kind of performance issues I would, and if frame rate is going to go down drastically. I play mostly source games, and only looking at buying two upcoming games. I am also open to suggestions for a new monitor, but preferbly I would like to stay away from gtg panels. Thanks in advance!

What is your budget for the new monitor?

What res are you currently gaming at?
And with Source games you're unlikely to see much of a performance hit but @1920x1200 you're definitely going to experience some difficulty with newer games on an 8800GT.

You'll be looking to game at low-med settings at that resolution for decent graphics upcoming games if you want a good fps. If your gaming on a 22 incher right now at 1680x1050 then you wouldn't be running at games maxed out now anyway, expect quite a performance hit.
