Default Upgrade laptop or get a new desktop?

Ok, so about a year ago I went to a local computer store and purchased a laptop. I didn't quite know what I was looking for, (I wasn't nearly experienced with computers as I am now) so I asked the guy there what would be a good gaming computer, preferably a laptop. The guy showed me a laptop that they had built at the store and told me it would run pretty much any game I wanted. A year later I bought Battlefield 4, and I was having problems. The game doesn't run as smooth as I think it should, even on low settings. So my question is, shoul I upgrade my laptop, or build my own desktop?

You can't upgrade the components in your laptop like you can a desktop (in the conventional way) so build your own desktop.
