okay guys:
i have a clan-mate who is due to rotate back from iraq soon.
he needs a new rig, and he has (obviously) a **** load of disposable income.
he has priced alienware and a couple other pre-builds, and has told me the price to beat is like 4500 dollars.
lets see what you guys can suggest for way less than that.
obviously i will want to include SLI g92 8800's, and probably a 24" monitor, an intel quad (haha its not MINE lol) with a good mobo, keyboard and g5 or g7 mouse, go ahead and put in speakers and an audio card, and about 500gb of disc space. i wont mind putting a small OC on it, but i dont want to have to OC the snot out of it, as he lives in illinois and i dont want him to have problems with it. NO water-cooling! just a good cooler.
suggestions please, try to keep it under 2500-3000 dollars.

ok ill keep it under 2500

room to spare....if you want to change up any parts or add.....but that system is kickass.

Well the 9800GX2 is suppose to come out FEb 19th, I'd get 2 of those, but that means you hve to get an nvidia chipset board... sux

45nm Quads like the q9450 are suppose to be out soon, anytime between now and march, so depending on when he comes back, might want to wait on one of those. E8400's just cam out and they blow away Q6600's when it comes to gaming, so I'd get one of those if you need it now

3870X2 is coming out on wednesday, and it supposedly scales better than SLI, better drivers, and actually works on crysis unlike SLI.

I would say...

Gigabyte x38-DQ6 $300
E8500 - $300
(2) 3870 X2's - $900
4gb Crucial Ballistics Tracers - $150
500gb Seagate Barracude 7200.11 - $120
Antec P190 Case - $400 (PSUs included)
Tuniq Tower 120mm - $50
XP Ultimate - $160
Logitech G15 - $85
Creative 7.1 Speakers - $90
Whatever kind of laser mouse - $50
Lite on SATA dvd-rw lightscribe - $35
Scepter 24" 2ms 1920 x 1200 LCD - $340

total $3070

EDIT: E8500 will be out in a week or so, along with the 3870 X2, that's why I put those in there

thanks hmammem. and 900 (just saw your post)
any advantage with going 2 x 250gb vs a single 500gb?
i really like my g7, prolly will go wit that one.
wont buy evga, even with someone else's money, lol. i like the XFX tho.
probably will add 2gb of ram, been thinking of ddr2 1066.
your system isimilar to the one i made on my own..i've got:
asus x38
q6700 (prolly will go with 6600 and overclock slightly)
4gb crucial 1066
vista ultimate
antec p182
corsair 620
logitech z-2300
g15
g7
TRUE
xtreme gamer soundblaster
hanns g 22"
2 x XFX 8800 g92
and the dvd rom
and its like 2900.
can drop the 6700 for 6600 and knock off 250 bucks i think. making parts 2650.
probably will charge him like 150ish for building it (although the intel experience would do me good lol), plus shipping when complete.
any other suggestions?
maybe 2850-2900 all said and done. and its uber. and of course i can instruct him how to overclock it farther. maybe even get him to join our little community here.

you cant get 2 8800gts with an x38 mobo man you should know that.

^^ word... him and hmammen both made that mistake...

LOL...oops...i knew that...i def clicked the wrong chipset.

those are what i meant. thanks.
