I'm looking at motherboard specs for sata connectors, 3Gb/s and 6Gb/s

Faster is better, but I'm thinking the hard drive is the bottleneck. So does a super fast sata connection really help when hard drives have limited speed?

What do you guys think?

you are correct

but there is something newer than hard drives now

SSD

and these babies are fast!

put couple of them in raid and you could probably surpass 3Gb/s

but for good old hard drives...... 3Gb/s is enough

Sata II is the current standard right now and it capable of 3Gb/s. As of this moment Sata III is only on a few boards and despite being available on the upcoming Asus P6X58, there aren't many ports to take advantage of. In the example above, only two are available.

But if you are looking for speed the others have been correct by suggesting a SSD. The only downside is the expense and lack of usable storage.
