Disabling Aero, especially while bench marking would be a good start.

its a start but there is much more than would need to be done. since the vista GUI is all hardware accelerated it uses you video card for everything which is a good thing saves ram and cpu but for benchmarking its hurting you. You may want to partition your hard drive and install Xp on the second part and compare scores.
