Question Stuck between a 8600gt and 1950pro

Hey everyone,

As the title states, Im debating between the 2.
HIS Radeon X1950PRO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3
MSI NX8600GT Twin Turbo 8600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3

One of them will be retiring an old but very reliable 6600gt, in a spare rig. Been searching around and can get either of them for roughly $110 shipped, (bought all i can afford right now )

Facts I already Know:
*8600Gt is DX10, but with the 128bit wont stand a chance to play DX10
*From looking at Benchmarks The 1950pro gets about 5-8 FPS more.
*8600Gt has higher stock core, but the 1950 has 256bit memory
*Ones from ATI and the others from Nvidia (soooo tired, its 3 am.... and im bored!)

So would like to hear some of your opinions on the 2.

Thanks
Tipsysmile

there's no competition between the 8600GT and x1950 pro.

THe 1950 pro outperforms it in every respect.

Yeah the only reason you would buy the 8600GT is for DX10, but then it wouldnt play any DX10 games at an acceptable frame rate

yep, x1950.

8600gt is just not a good card - and your right, even though it is dx10 compatible there is not way it can really handle any dx10 games.

It's a little interesting because, I saw an 8500GT running Bioshock on full settings (demonstration at my local store for a guy who just had his computer built, or not entirely sure what they were doing)

I was somewhat impressed, as it ran quite decently. Maybe DX9 isn't that bad on these cards and is just as fast as an X1950? And if that's the case, it is cheaper than an X1950, it might be a viable option, but definitley not if you want to run DX10. I wouldn't know though, you should look up some benchmarks.

I usually always suggest a high-end DX9 card over mid-range DX10 card, but, lately I've been surprised. Despite everybody suggesting against it, you should look into the 8600GT.

Actually, maybe a 2900GT could be a better option than those two because it's in the same price range @ $169.99

The cheapest X1950PRO I could find was $132.99

But just wait about a week and a half and I wouldn't be surprised to see the price go down closer to $159.99 or even $149.99

Well I have the same opinion as most here.
Do not think, take X1950pro and be happy. 8600GT is not worth it.
Few weeks ago I was too searching for a GPU. 8600GT was rejected after day of searching throw internet. At test it sucked, it is too weak to normally perform on DX10. It is better to take good DX9 GPU then worse DX10.
On the other hand I bought 8600GTS OC edition cuz X1950pro was out of stock and I'm completly satisfied with it.

Forget what I said, everybody else's right, if you can get an X1950PRO for $105, then definitley go with the X1950PRO. Unfortunatley, here in Canada, there's a much bigger price gap between the 8600GT and X1950PRO; $100 and $165 respecitively. Don't quite know why.

But US prices seem to be neck and neck. In that case, for sure X1950PRO is the way to go.

X1950 pro is much much faster, however stay away from the sapphire 256mb version, has bad heat issues. Try and get a H.I.S, gecube or something like that, i used to have one. 'Twas brilliant, CoD4 maxed out minor one or two settings.
