This will do then....

What will happen if you don't use the standard, it just won't work? Or will it just be slower?

Ya. I like it better than microsoft word, and even if it were slightly less useful....the price obviously more than makes that difference!

I say that looks good but maybe consider a HIS x1800gto IceQ3 Turbo. You can unlock it to xl or x1900xt speeds pretty easily.

I love MS Office -- much better than OOo2.0 IMO -- but they're right; is the price really worth it?

Just focus on using the technologies that will speed up your computer:

CPU--dual core, at least 1MB cache, NOT Pentium D :-p
RAM--DDR2-800, Dual Channel, good timings
HD-- SATA 3.0G, 16MB Cache, RAID if possible
Video Card-- GDDR3 RAM, 256MB or more

Also: consider getting a sound card. You can get a pretty decent one for $40 or so, and it makes a huge difference in sound quality. Plus, it will take a little load off the CPU, and that's always good.

still not sure if you need a monitor or not?

speakers?

Core 2 prices will come down, if you need to buy now I would get a socket 939 4400 with 2 mb cache if you have to buy now, which is about $230.

The E6300 is cheaper than that, so why spend more money on something worse?

if your on a tight budget and even the basic intel conroe mobo's that have no overclocking options are 120 bucks, probably need to spend 170 or so on a decent mobo, and 200 or so on the processor, so that would be 370, plus more epensive ddr2 ram, when you can find a good mobo for an x2 for 60-80 bucks, so when you on a budget you can't always buy the fastest stuff.
