Sound card question

I'm looking to get an audio card, and I'm not looking for anything special. I have onboard sound, and the only thing I use my sound for is playing music on the PC and playing games. But, I could care less about the sound on the games. Should I get one of those $8.00 cards, or will the onboard suffice? Also, I notice that on my mobo and (if i get a soundcard) it has several colored inputs. If I want to put a surround sound type of thing in my room, do I need to buy a SET of speakers? Or could I buy like a couple different ones, and combine?

onboard sound will be sufficient enough, but if you have some nice speakers then you should go for a soundcard.
