what exactly is a slave drive, and can a drive with slave drive disabled be enabled?

Each IDE controller has 2 channels. Primary and Secondary. They are identical, but they need different names for the system to know to wich channele a drive is connected to. Each channel can hold 2 IDE devices. A "Master" and a "Slave". You have to set the devices to "Master" or "Slave" with little jumpers: http://www.geocities.jp/eastexit_bb/images/hdd2.jpg

Both Master and Slave are basically the same, it's just for identifying purposes. For instance, Windows uses C:, D:, E: etc. for naming the different partitions on the drives. The C: partition will typically be the first primary partition on the Master drive on the Primary IDE channel.

is it possible to have one drive on sata, and then another seperate one on ide?
