Six Core?

i have my AMD Phenom II X2 B55 processor unlocked to 4 cores and OC'd to 6.2... and as lipzo stated earlier, most processes dont exceed 4 cores, which is why i don't find it necessary to spend extra money on extra cores. More cores result in a lower default core speed, usually. and the lesser the cores you can over clock it to a higher speed and not have it crap out as easily.

OCed to 6.2!??
Can you open up notepad without your computer melting? :p

Yes, more cores usually=more heat and can limit OCing. Also, some CPUs simply won't go past a certain speed without needing an insanely high amount of voltage.
As stated, 6 cores is unnecessary. The 2500k is the way to go.

Hey guys I'm still putting together a CPU and trying to do as much research on my PC before buying.
Good idea.

Anyways I notice that i never see anyone talking about the I7-990X Core? All I keep reading is the Quad core threads.
Some people do, it all depends on where you read.

Thats the one I'm thinking of buying.
err, OK.

I want to get into overclocking, ...
I thought you liked "Cores" or is it "Clocks", or both.

If you want FREE Cores then see here:
http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/535501-official-amd-k10-5-core-cache.html

and your can buy these Motherboards to unlock hidden Cores:

MSI: http://event.msi.com/mb/unlockap/
ASRock: http://www.asrock.com/feature/ucc/index.asp?cat=Introduction

If you want an overclockable Processor for a LOW Price try here:

... and I cant seem to find anyone that has done it with this one, or I'm just missing it.
There is bound to be some info if you Google for it :) .

I noticed they are selling even more expensive CPUs, but to me that look slower? Heres a example. hmm I noticed it says server/workstation on the box. im guessing thats why. Keep in mind I'm new to this!
An Intel Xeon will be the most expensive. You might want a "Sandy Bridge" if you want Intel and probably an i7 (or an i5 to save money). Today the (fastest) Intel Chip is fastest (overall) on the fewest Cores (and Games usually work only on a few Cores), soon the Llano will be faster than the SB (due to it's faster built-in GPU) at a lower cost.

If you can wait a couple of months then there is the Llano and Bulldozer both of which will be faster than the SB (when they come out), in December there is another update to the SB. The longer you wait the faster they get for less money - but if you wait forever then you will have nothing.

IF you want Intel (now) check out here: http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/987569-best-i7-overclocking.html see which overclocks best in your price range. You will also have to decide if you wish to overclock with Air or Water (more expensive).

Figure out what you can afford and what you think you would like to do and when you are planning on buying one - then let us know.

The rest of us can put our heads together and we can come up with a couple of suggestions. If you can find one (or a few) Systems (already put together) that does some of what you want then we can suggest how to fix what you feel is missing.

We would all just be guessing if we don't know when you want to buy and how much you would prefer to pay.
