Default should i upgrade

i have a ati radeon x800 it plays all the current games including battelfield 2, however it doesnt live up to some my gameing needs (having 20,000 troops on screen in rome: total war) should i upgrade my card if not now when, and if i should upgrade, should i stick with ati or go with nvidia

GO with Nvidia all the way, if you plan on spending money check out the GPU in my comment, its the best graphics processor out now!

the one thing i have against nvidia is that the products are a little confusing, some graphic cards are 600$ and others that came out at the same time are 15$ i assumed the really cheap ones are for laptops (when i think about if i have no idea why they come out with cards that cheap)

how can a 150$ and a 250$ videocard be an upgrade to a raedon x800 or is nvidia just that cheaper

Well a 6800 is better by some people.
Plus if you plan on playing the new unreal engine youll need a nvidia card.

You want at least a 6800gt as an upgrade, that should be your minimum. Assuming you are agp, you have to spend at least:

Check tomshardware for benchmarks on that vs 6800gt. It also costs alot more and it may lack shader support 3.
