The GT will be better unless you're running on a really high resolution, in which the 512mb would come in handy.

yup. extra video memory does not equal better performance, unless the game is using an insane amount of textures

The 7600GS can't utilize that much VRAM anyway even if you do have a high resolution (in which case you would need a way better card to run anything decently.) It's just a marketing ploy. Get the 256 7600GT
