Slashdot | Student and Professor Build Budget Supercomputer

Someone posted this on the ubuntu forums...I felt I should share...

Wow, that looks so awesome...

Nice, not so sure what it all means but a small supercomputer for just under 2.5k? Does that mean its way way way faster than the highest end quads or 8 cores?

Not sure, he built it using X2 3800+s...and according to Microwulf: Hardware Manifest he paid $165 each for them...

So, it looks like he bought the parts a while ago...I bet you could build it for closer to 1k now with some budget shopping...

Pay the same as him for motherboards ($80, though I bet you could get a better deal now) and use x2 3600+ brisbanes seriously overclocked...

and then use: Corsair 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Memory Kit (2 x 1024MB) at TigerDirect.com for ram instead of the $120 he paid a stick you pay $30...

$320
$240
$256
------
$816

And you spend $816 on what he spent $1972 for...

I bet you could easily cut it below $1200 for your own supercomputer...
