Removing Thermal Pad From CPU Heatsink?

What do I use to get the stock thermal pad off off a stock CPU heatsink. it is a Core 2 Duo E6600

I want to use Artic Silver 5 instead of the thermal pad.

Any help will be appreciated.

Just use some isopropyl alcohol.

yeah, any relatively high purity alcohol (no not the stuff you drink) should do it. personally i use methylated spirits because it's cheaper. isopropyl is probably the best. don't confuse a thermal pad with thermal paste. it should be thermal paste on the e6600. different cleaners should be used for a thermal pad which is wax based.

wait a minute i remember being told never use rubbing alchohol on a computer?

and isnt rubbing alchohal and isopropyl alcohol the exact same thing?

rubbing alcohol is less pure than what would be branded as isopropyl. i don't know where you heard that but i doubt it. isopropyl is an age old solution, it's a solvent that dissolves only what you want and evaporates quickly. it doesn't get much better than that.
