Its only marginally faster, WD has proven that it doesn't need the cache to be as fast..

The samsung 640GB is theoretically faster then both of them because it uses 333GB platters instead of 320GB platters on the Seagate 640 and the WD640.

No because WD raptors spin at an extra 2,500rpm its mechanically impossible for a drive that is 7500rpm using the same modern tech to beat a 10krpm drive. They are quite a lot louder and more sensitive to vibrations and more expensive hence why not many people have them. Solid State Disks are faster still as there are no moving parts to inhibit the speed. Hybrid drives also exist but aren't commercially available to my knowledge which use a combination of SSD and mechanical although these have been skipped out due to price/performance if you want to blow money on a fast and very expensive drive the $100 difference of a hybrid and SSD drive is hardly a large concern.

RAIDed 7200rpm drives do beat the original raptors and come very close to the performance of a singe modern raptor drive
