Default Ram and ram slots questions

1. Is it possible for 1 ram slot to go bad and damage the ram?
2. Is there a way to check the ram slot without putting ram in it?

My sisters computer stopped booting entirely so I removed the ram from slot 2 and the computer worked. I then tried switching the ram and with the bad ram in slot 1 the computer would load farther but not completely.

Now my sister wants to get a replacement ram but I don't know if the slot is bad. I don't want to put the good ram in for fear that it will damage the ram. So anyone have suggestions?
