Default RAID - What does it do?

I'm seeing RAID mentioned quite a lot around these forums. I sorta get the jist of it, but what advantages does it have?

Let me give an example, I just did a build for my sister whos going off to college, I assume she WILL NEVER back up her information so I RAID 1ed 2 80GB Drives for her.

in simple real world visualization...imagine trying to put together a puzzle with 1 hand vs 2...I think that's easy enough to understand right?
