What would be better.

7800GTX 256mb and X2 4400+

or X1800XT 512mb and X2 3800+?

This is a for a gaming machine.

wait a little and get a 7800gtx512. But if you must buy now, the first setup is better. You can look at some benchmarks on Tomshardware to compare if you would like.
