Default Q6600, old, new....

Hey guys,

I just bought a Q6600/MSI P45 Neo3 FIR/2x2Gb OCZ Reaper 1066 to upgrade one of my systems, but since then I've read some concerns regarding the overclocking potential of "new" Q6600 batches. First of all, does anyone know how I can tell if it's a "new" or "old" one. Does anyone know what the difference is? I was planning on going to 3GHz per core max, would that still be doable with the new batches? HSF is Scythe Zipang, and the case is very well vented with 120mm Papsts all around.

I'm asking cause I can still return / exchange any of the parts since they are still boxed, was planning on assembling this Tuesday.

While I'm at it, I am still using good ole Arctic Silver TP, I've been seeing some new brands being recommended. Has anyone recorded the actual differences in temp that I could achieve using something else?

Thanks!

ANY q6600, old hot B3 steppings included, should do 3ghz with ease.

To find out the stepping post up your batch code which is on the front of the CPU or on the side of the box. Begins with L..will look something like L807A452 for example.

Yeah that's a newer one. It should still do 3ghz no problem but getting above 3.2ghz or so may be difficult. Only one way to find out.

In the future the first number is the year, the 2nd and 3rd numbers are the week..and everything after that has to do with the batch.

So for example your code L815B541 was fabbed in Week 15 of 2008....batch B...wafer 541
