My gaming machine has an AMD Athlon FX-57 San Diego 2.8 a friend is building a computer and is looking at using a AMD Athlon 64x2 4600 2.4 We where looking here

http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=481&model2=467&chart=188

and his rates alot better than mine but mine is still 100$ more at new egg. So can somebody tell me the why the price difference, and how a single core compares to a duel core for gaming only. Thanks!!

The FX series are the only CPUs that have an unlocked multiplier (can go up). They are also the highest performing and quality of the AMD line at the time of release.

A 4600+ can beat the FX in multi-threaded applications but for those that use a single-threaded - the FX will be better.
