Problems w/ video playback on a new build

Hello.

I just built a PC for video editing purposes and am having some difficulty playing HD video on quicktime and/or VLC player. Most things play fine, but some stock footage from video Copilot's Action Essentials 2 manages to freeze up my system. Using All_CPU meter, I can see that playing these certain videos maxes out a single core to 100% while the other cores remain relatively low. This causes my program to freeze, and then make my system run poorly until I restart. My GTX 660 graphics card does not appear to be stressed at all during the video playing. I have an Intel 6-core processor.

I downloaded Action Essentials on my laptop (where they have no issues upon playback) and transferred them to my PC via and external USB HD. I dont know why these files are forcing my quicktime and VLC players to quit making them unusable.

I would really appreciate some help or advise.
Thanks,
