im gonna reformat the computer this weekend. Sounds like that would help alot.


im using about 40 of about 140 gigs. And have recently reformatted.

Also, ilovesocks (lovin the name by the way) makes an excellent point, there is just not much point to upgrading a Dell, just save your money for a custom build.
To be completely honest, your system sounds nice (for a Dell), and could most likely net your approx. $500 on eBay from some idiot.
Then, take that money and maybe another $200 and build a completely new system that could rock that Dells world.

Sorry this isnt more in depth, I'm exhausted and this is just saved from a quick build I priced earlier and saved.
But this is just to give you an idea of what a good system could cost that could bend your Dell over and dominate it.

I would deff consider a new system it I could get rid of this one. Ill look around and see if maybe I would sell it locally. But after reformatting it will probably suit me fine for now.

I still havent had time to reformat my computer, but i was thinking...


... say I wanted to try and overhaul my dell, I know I have allready been advised against this but...

... what would stop me from buying a new processor (and possibly motherboard) and hard drive(s) and using the rest of the components from the dell??? It seams to me that my video card, memory, and drives suit me just fine. If I cannot sell my computer wouldnt that be a better plan than starting over completely? I could always upgrade the other components later if I wanted.



EDIT: My dell has a btx chassie, im not sure if this would have an effect with the motherboard?

A lot of people here are suggesting getting a new computer, thats way overkill for a very small problem that you are having. You don't sound like an avid gamer so that computer is just fine, you dont need to upgrade anything I doubt for what you do, people here always suggest what seem to be expensive solutions to minor problems. Yes you could do upgrades for parts but it seems very expensive for something you don't really need to do. What you are experiencing is almost always what happens with the operating systems that manufacturers give out, I know for a fact that HP loads their OS with tons of usless junk. Reformat your computer with a clean copy of windows xp home or pro, and you should be fine.

Yeah, for what you are doing it is almost certainly not a hardware problem. I would guess a reformat would do wonders and afterwards be very careful about adware, spyware etc.

Also, here is a hint for you when you reformat.

Get partition magic. Create a new partition on the unused space of your hard drive. Then move all your music, data files etc that you want to save to the new partition. Then reformat C:, and you will not loose all your files.

BTW, after you reinstall Windows to C, I would continue keeping all your personal files on the second partition so it is always easy to reformat in the future without loosing your data

I will check out the partition program. Sounds like just creating partitions on a single hard drive with that program (for OS, games, media, applications) can even speed up a computer? if I am understanding that right?



I was thinking I would make 2 partitions. One for my music (and other media), and one for programs. Then then leave just the OS on the the C: drive.
-sound like a good plan? will making an extra partition make a difference for me?

"this disc contains one or more partitions which cannot be moved"




im not sure what to do now???



My Disc contains,

DELLUTILITY (*.) FAT
Local Disc (C: ) NTFS
Local Disk (*.) CP/M, Concurrent DOS, CTOS

and for whatever reason, it will not let me make a partition???

u dont need a new system, just reformat your harddrive and the problem will go away, dells arent that bad, and theyre not slow, theyre just not very upgradeable (i came from a dell myself)

buy another harddrive and install it as your slave, and backup all your files, then boot of the windows xp cd and do a clean format.
