Default Pentium vs Athlon

I am upgrading my computer and have in mind to get a P4 3.2Ghz. What is the equavilant of this in AMD Athlon and will it be cheaper. what are benifits and drawbacks of AMD?
All responses will be greatly appreciated

The Athlon provides more raw power and is more efficent per clock cycle.

Yep, threads like this, or ATI vs. Nvidia, or PC vs. Mac are going to be closed, because TF is flooded with threads like this.
