Default Pentium D?

Unfortunately my mobo is limited to P4 or Pentium D. I'm really curious as to how a Pentium D compares with a P4. Is Pentium D dual core? Obviously its not the same as a core 2 duo, but how good is it exactly?

Yes Pentium D is a dual core. In terms of how good it is? The Pentium D line is at the bottom of the pyramid with performance compared to the other dual cores such as C2D and X2 dual ccores.

Right, but compared to the p4? is it a huge difference? or would it be better just to upgrade RAM to get more performance?

Upgrade your RAM i'd say, if you are planning to upgrade your CPU, save up and do a big upgrade.
