Default pcie x8 fit in a x4 slot?

Im thinkin bout buyin a sas raid card, it goes in a pci-e x8 slot. On my mobo, i already got both of the x16 slots filled with vid cards. It leaves me with the x4 slot at the top. Will the card work in it? I have heard that they are backwards compatible, but im not sure if they really are or not

i don't think so. 4x is a different shape. 8x and 16x both use the same size slot but 4x is about half the size

Shoulden't work, if it was 4x it would work in 8x or 16x, smaller will work in the bigger, but not vice versa.

so theoretically speaking, would a x1 card work with a x16 slot? (x1 is the really small, usually white one)

yea i should of read up on it more, so pretty much they are hmm whats the word.... forwards compatible with each other. The smaller bandwidth ones can fit into a bigger bandwidth slot, but not a smaller one
