Default OverClock

forgive me for being newb, but I would really like the pros/cons on overclocking. I have searched for threads about this and wikipedia it, but would really appreciate it if someone could explain in lamens terms to me. I am building my own rig this summer (2,500) for workstation/gaming and am wondering if I should overclock it. Does it damage the computer? Do I need a bigger power supply?

Con's have basically been listed but i see the main point of overclocking as attaining a more powerful computer without having to buy highend parts or even reaching power beyond what could be purchased. for instance my processor if overclocked a little further could outstrip an FX-60 and effectively be more powerful than anything on the market.
