You can get 8600GTS now for $132 after rebate
Newegg.com - MSI NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC GeForce 8600GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

When it first came out it was around $199

Edit: I found another one that cost only $122 after rebate
Newegg.com - Foxconn 8600GTS-256 GeForce 8600GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

Thats a nice price for 8600GTS

If the specifications are true, I'm looking to get one of these sometime next year when the prices are lower. It seems like they'll replace the high-end 7 series cards; I think 64 stream processors will be enough power.

Well since dx 10 games are coming out, people should start moving away from dx 9.

The drivers latest beta drivers for beta have been pretty good.

I'd rather have a little drop in FPS if I can utilise DX10, because I'm only getting the card for future games released next year, and they're not graphically demanding. Plus, it'll have other features not available with the ageing X1950XT that I can benefit from because I'm not a heavy gamer.

Saying the X1950XT can touch the 8800GTS is really stretching it.

It isnt really... Sometimes it can beat it in certain benchmarks, most of the time it is 10-15 FPS behind. I would call that touching.
