Default new system, bios not finding hard drive

hey folks...

first timer here, building my first pc. the short story is that bios isn't seeing my HDD. it was before when i first got into bios, but then went for a ubuntu install and couldn't get past partitioning - no root system defined.

i have so far: triple checked cabling, confirmed power is getting to the hdd, switched sata ports and cables, enabled sata in my bios setup, cleared cmos...

asus p5gc-mx/1333
seagate sata 300 500GB HDD.

Would appreciate any help, this is baffling!
