For the longest time I was running a RAID 0 setup using the on board NVRAID controller and two Western Digital Caviar 500GB drives until one day the array became "unreadable" in windows. After doing much reading, I have been told there is no hope getting it to work again, to try and recover my files and start fresh. Fine.

So, I am building a new RAID setup and have been advised to lose the on board RAID and invest in a separate controller. Because the files I'm working with are sensitive and important and higher reliability is needed, I'm torn between setting up a RAID 0+1 array or a RAID 5 array.

Nevertheless the components I've purchased/own are as follows:

- Highpoint ROCKETRAID 2300 Raid Controller
- 4 WD Caviar 500gb HDD's

So, should I use RAID 0+1 (RAID 10) and have 1TB of storage mirrored to two other drives for backup or RAID 5 and have (so I'm told) 1.5TB of storage for reliability?
