Here is the 1st build that I have done if it helps at all for referencing anything:
http://www.techist.com/forums/f76/build-list-176815/

It looks like that one was built just about right for my needs at the office and looking at the task manager performance, I do use 5-6g of ram quite frequently so it looks like your recommendations were pretty spot on for that machine which is why I'm asking for help again building my home PC.

I won't have nearly as many programs open at once on my home computer as I do for work, but still want it to perform well when running autocad/adobe pro/solidworks/macromedia/MSoffice/etc, and I would also like it to be used as my media computer to replace my DVRs around the house. I'm not sure how it would be best to set up the hard drives to handle large media storage, but I'm assuming I'll need several at least as I plan to store my blurays and other media on the computer.

For the DVR aspect, I will plan to use SageTv to stream my HD shows to the other TV's around the house. The house is prewired so I won't need to stream wirelessly. SageTV® Media Center - PVR, Music and Photos for Windows and Linux PCs and consumer electronics devices

Here is some hardware I think I will need:
Newegg.com - Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 Dual TV Tuner / Encoder 1229 PCI-Express x1 Interface - TV Tuners & Video Devices
Newegg.com - SiliconDust - HDHomeRun Network-based Dual Digital - HDTV Tuner Ethernet Interface

Plus whatever I would need to copy blurays with the HD audio to the computer. Obviously I would need a Bluray player, but I wouldn't need a soundcard would I if I won't actually be watching it on the computer?

I really have no idea where to start with this as a lot of builds I have read about in media forums are solely set up for dedicated home theater computers and for the really serious, add a media server to the build as well with dozens of hard drives.

I just want the thing to perform well and not have the screen start jumping around for someone watching tv, just b/c I am doing something on the computer. I figured it would be cheaper and certainly take up less space having 1 higher performing machine to serve both uses as opposed to 2 separate builds.

With that said, should I look at Intel, AMD? Quad core, faster dual core? 4g of memory or 8 again? I don't to spend more than necessary to have it serve my needs, but certainly don't want to under-do it either.

As for the media, I will be streaming it to 4 boxes to start with and may add on from there. Not sure how that affects computer performance, but here is a link to the reciever:

Thanks for the help!

Here is what I have put together so far in my shopping cart. I assume this is plenty sufficient for what I am wanting to use this for. If there are any suggestions on brand or places that look like I could save money or are worth upgrading, I'm all ears.

I'm also not positive how I want the hard drives to work. I've never done anything beyond a single main HD with another one I back up to, so please bear with me on that aspect. Just using hypotheticals, supposing a 50gb bluray movie in full HD pic and audio, I could get 40 of those on the 2TB HD I'm looking at.

Knowing I will outgrow that very quickly, is there anything I should plan up front getting this thing set up as far as storage goes?
Keep all the media on a separate HD? Then keep adding HD's until I run out of SATA ports?
Could that be easily transferred to a server type storage machine later or would I have a big mess to deal with? I just want to do it right the first time and avoid as many headaches down the road as I can.

Also, do I need a sound or video card since I won't actually be watching or listing to any of the media through the computer?

Anyone have any advice? There seems to be a lot of choices in processors around that price range. Is this about the best bang for the buck? Does it seem way overkill? The money isn't burning a hole in my pocket or anything, I just want to make sure the system performs right.

I also added a videocard as that was left off of the earlier list. I don't plan to run dual monitors or anything on this build. Are there any foreseeable problems with the one I chose?

The mobo I had selected had an open box option for about $60 less. Is that a good idea or is it best to stay away from open box stuff?
