It looks like that one was built just about right for my needs at the office and looking at the task manager performance, I do use 5-6g of ram quite frequently so it looks like your recommendations were pretty spot on for that machine which is why I'm asking for help again building my home PC.
I won't have nearly as many programs open at once on my home computer as I do for work, but still want it to perform well when running autocad/adobe pro/solidworks/macromedia/MSoffice/etc, and I would also like it to be used as my media computer to replace my DVRs around the house. I'm not sure how it would be best to set up the hard drives to handle large media storage, but I'm assuming I'll need several at least as I plan to store my blurays and other media on the computer.
For the DVR aspect, I will plan to use SageTv to stream my HD shows to the other TV's around the house. The house is prewired so I won't need to stream wirelessly. SageTV® Media Center - PVR, Music and Photos for Windows and Linux PCs and consumer electronics devices
Here is some hardware I think I will need:
Newegg.com - Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 Dual TV Tuner / Encoder 1229 PCI-Express x1 Interface - TV Tuners & Video Devices
Newegg.com - SiliconDust - HDHomeRun Network-based Dual Digital - HDTV Tuner Ethernet Interface
Plus whatever I would need to copy blurays with the HD audio to the computer. Obviously I would need a Bluray player, but I wouldn't need a soundcard would I if I won't actually be watching it on the computer?
I really have no idea where to start with this as a lot of builds I have read about in media forums are solely set up for dedicated home theater computers and for the really serious, add a media server to the build as well with dozens of hard drives.
I just want the thing to perform well and not have the screen start jumping around for someone watching tv, just b/c I am doing something on the computer. I figured it would be cheaper and certainly take up less space having 1 higher performing machine to serve both uses as opposed to 2 separate builds.
With that said, should I look at Intel, AMD? Quad core, faster dual core? 4g of memory or 8 again? I don't to spend more than necessary to have it serve my needs, but certainly don't want to under-do it either.
As for the media, I will be streaming it to 4 boxes to start with and may add on from there. Not sure how that affects computer performance, but here is a link to the reciever:
