Default New Build

First, I don't fully understand all the technical aspects so bare with me!

I currently have about $1,500 to spend.

My biggest priority is photography. I edit with Capture and Photoshop so good graphics is a necessity.

I like fast.

I don't game on the PC (that's what my XBOX360 is for) but I'd like to be able to play something if I ever wanted.

I'd like to be able to pipe my music and stored video into my home entertainment system. That may a network thing I do later though.

I already have a monitor - SAMSUNG TOC T240 Rose Black 24" 5ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 DC 20000:1(1000:1) - which I really like (so please don't tell me I picked a bad one!)

So with that in mind, this is what I am currently looking at for the rest. The prices are from newegg with today's prices.

CASE
NOT SURE! It will go under a desk with a cabinet door in front of it so looks are not nearly as important as being able to put everything in it and keeping it cool!

CASE FAN & POWER SUPPLY
Will depend on the case. I looked a a few that include but just no sure yet.

MOTHERBOARD
ASUS RAMPAGE FORMULA LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard ($288.99)

not sure though

PROCESSOR
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor ($309.99)

I do like that Q6600 as well and it's $184.99. Is the extra $125 worth it for the Q9550?

CPU COOLER
Not sure but I want to help keep the heat down so I'll probably pick something. Maybe the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler ($26.99)

THERMAL PASTE
Artic Silver 5 Thermal Compound ($5.99)

MEMORY
Anything DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 - I think. Any suggestions?!
Originally I wanted 8GB but I may not run Vista (have not decided) and I thought XP won't read anything over 4GB. I guess I need to find out.
(I figure my total cost for memory will be $100 or less)

HARD DRIVES
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive ($64.99)
- this will handle the OS and main programs

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (bare drive) ($139.99 each x 2 = $279.98)
- one for storage and the other to backup

I may buy another and dedicate it for music and video with intentions of using it along with the home entertainment system.

DVD
LITE-ON Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 20X DVDĪR DVD Burner with LightScribe ($27.99)

GRAPHICS
EVGA 01G-P3-1280-AR GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card ($344.99)

is that overkill?! Why is it so hard to choose a graphics card?!

OTHER
SABRENT CRW-UNIB 68-in-1 USB 2.0 Internal Card Reader w/ USB 2.0 Port supports SDHC/VISTA ($13.99)

That is $1,336.91 which does not include the case, fan, power supply, cooler, memory, and anything else I may have left out. This obviously puts me over $1,500.

THANKS in advance for the help!

Any OS won't read 4gb or more unless it's 64-bit, XP or Vista both. Make sure you grab 64bit either way.

Newegg.com - G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

These are pretty sweet. You can pick up two of them, will cost you 100 bucks.

Core i7 920 (better than a q6600 or q9550 and cheaper than the 9550)
Asus X58
6gb DDR3 Kit
GTX 260 Core 216 55nm (about as powerful as the GTX 280)
TX-2 Sunbeam (better than AS5)
Case is your choice
Corsair 650tx (is enough)

Should be enough.. if I left some stuff blank, its because you already have those in your first post)

Newegg.com - Sunbeam CR-CCTF 120mm "Core Contact Freezer" CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks

Edit: OMG Vernong you beat me to it

If he goes i7 though, then the Sunbeam Core Contact will be useless.

I just noticed it comes with Far Cry 2 as well just like the other version that is 65nm and $5 less.... sell it

Also Superclocked clocks are mostly easy to attain with a normal card (even easier with this 55nm)
