Question Never really found out...

This question always puzzled me, like I knew the Ati R420 radeon cards ( x800, x850, etc ) outperformed the Geforce 6 series cards ( to a small degree ) based on a lot of benchmarks. However what seemingly puzzles me is still to this day I don't know overall which is better, the Ati R520 cards ( x1900, x1950xtx, etc ) or the Geforce 7 cards ( 7900, 7950, etc ). I've looked at a ton of benchmarks and they always seem to be along the same lines, the ati cards dominating, or the geforce 7 series cards dominating...

I mean which one is it? Can anyone provide a clear clarification on the topic at hand?

For the most part...the ATI are faster. But the thing is some of the Nvidia cards can be overclocked so much or they have more memory for the same price, that its more of a pick and choose.

The x1900GT is actully more powerful than a stock 7900GS...but once you overclock the 7900GS (as it overclocks very well) it becomes about as powerful as a x1950PRO.

The 7900GT is kind of the middle man in the thing here and is more along the lines of an x1950PRO when stock...but the x1950PRO will still beat it stock.

The X1900xtx for the same price as the 7950GT is actully quite a bit more powerful, not so much after overclocking but the thing is the 7950GT has 512 memory opposed to 256. This gap decreases at higher res.

So it's all about preference or circumstance.

I think it depends on the particular cards and the deal you get on them.

And some ATI cards do overclock very well. My His IceQ3 x1800gto overclocks from (12pipes @ 520/500) to (16pipes @ 750/790) on the stock cooler. When I got it, it was in the same league as a 7600gt in price and performance. The 3dmark05 scores for a system like mine with my card and a 7600gt is ~6700, with my overclock I get a little over 10,000. I've never seen a 7600gt overclock that well with a stock cooler.
