Need a long lasting rig

Skt 939, albeit dated, is not obsolete yet... look at all the older Pentium 4 machines that are still out there and running. So lasting 2-4, even 5 or more years is very realistic. now if you just want a newer machine then by all means go for it. But if you have a decent setup now, companies are still making upgrades and parts for the 939 chips. and yes x2 opty's are very good for the money.

what do you have now (machine specs and how much do you want to spend? We can help if all you want to do is upgrade... or make a new build... either way, we can help you spend your money! LOL :p

right now I have:

bfg 7800gt
dfi lanparty sli-dr
2 gig ram
amd 64 3500

What is the top 3 CPUs money can buy for socket 939? I guess I can just upgrade the video card and cpu.

thats right lance i meant to include the opty's in there as well...
the top 3 cpu's imo would be:

opteron 165, a fantastic overclocker...if you have a hsf you can get oem, but the one it comes with is great:

opteron 170, a little more expensive, but cheaper than building a new rig...i don't think you can get higher overclocks with this one than the 165, but stock speed is a little higher:

x2 4400 toledo oem, has the 1mb cache, a little higher stock speed than opty 170, a little less $ than the 170, a little more than the 165:

all in all i think if you are going to overclock the 165 is the best deal to be had. 160 bucks and it will run circles around your 3500(and probably my 4200, lol).
as far as the video card upgrade, i would wait on that and see how the cpu is going to help things. a 7800gt is a pretty awesome card, better than my 7900gs...which means to get better performance i think you'd have to go to a 7950gt/gx2, or an 8800gtx. which both cost a good deal of money at the moment. i'd wait on that. 8800 should drop a bit in a couple/few weeks. it certainly will if ati's new card is priced lower.
good luck!

Ya, if you are not requiring a monster computer right now then get a opteron 165 and pop it in there. YOu already have plenty of ram and a great video card. 2 1mb L2 cache is great. And it oc's like a beast :)
