Thumbs up Need Help Summer Build

OK. I need advice on my first build. I am willing to spend 1700 but would definately like to spend alot less. I have haphazardly compiled a build w/ the parts below. The purpose of this machine will be to record audio / play games / general entertainment excluding the need for a tv tuner. Do not curb the jargon for a newbie and especially not the parts, as I am not all that new. It's just the first build. I have speakers a mouse a keyboard a monitor and all that ****.
I have decided to wait for the conroe and figured the high end version would be 600 USD. I'm unsure of the mobo. i AM also unsure of what to do about the graphics card since the dx10 capable cards will come out soon? should i just build when the conroe comes out w/out graphics card then buy a next gen graphics card, whatdya think . how long is the wait supposed to be? anyway to recap. audio ****, future proofed, general entertainment, maximum gaming.

ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Pentium 4 670 Prescott 800MHz FSB LGA 775 EM64T Processor Model BX80547PG3800F (THIS IS JUST FOR PRICING. I'M WAITING FOR CONROE) or will current AMD's be less expensive and get the job done. probably not since i multitask yada yada. oh and maximum settings on the games for years to come.

2 MAXTOR 250 GB HD's at 74.99

1 Samsung Optical Drive at 39.99

i need no sound card. i have an sound ad/da converter conected via firewire.

whatdya think? let see if we can get the cost down. it's currently at 1643.00 USD. Please help!! Let me know if this is too vague . Let get this **** built.

With DX10, it's probably not worth waiting for G80. Maybe get it and Windows Vista next summer. By then, there will be a fair number of DX10 games, and Vista will have some of the bugs worked out of it.

what of the current build itself. anything that sticks out as to cut down price? anything that looks stupid? remember this is to be the centerpiece of my digital life that i'd like to be upgradeable versitile and last for many years!

Conroe prices:
E6700 (2.66Ghz, 4MB cache) - $530
E6600 (2.40Ghz, 4MB cache) - $315
E6400 (2.13Ghz, 2MB cache) - $240
E6300 (1.86Ghz, 2MB cache) - $210

I honestly recommend getting the E6600. It's over $200 cheaper and can be overclocked the the same frequency.

If you are going to be getting a DX10 card, why are you going to get a 7900GT?

I wonder how much the E6300 can be overclocked.

k since ur building in the summer, ur clearly gonna get a different motherboard, and a intel Conroe, and depending on which month of the summer you might also be buying a 8800GT.

Oh, sorry, I forgot to mention in my post. That motherboard will not run Conroe. You are going to need a mobo with a 975 chipset.

I recommend maybe getting the 7600GT for now. Great price/performance ratio.

I'm pretty sure you need a mobo with the broadwater chipset...not released yet
