Note: It is impossible to build an "Extreme" gaming PC with a $1000 budget, but i can assure you that you wont be dissapointed with this system for what you would pay.

I recently built a new Computer for somewhere around this price, but i Recycled my old monitor. Mine was a bit over $1000, but i'll try my best to find a cheaper build for you.
AMD Phenom II X4 940- $145 @ Newegg
BIOSTAR TA790GXE 128M AM2+/AM3 AMD Motherboard $100@Newegg
Corsair 750TX Power Supply $130@Newegg (The Modular version, the 750HX is $150, worth it if you have a mid-tower case)
Hitachi Deskstar 1TB HDD 7200 RPM HDD $89.99@ Newegg (Offer Ends 2/28)
PNY geforce 9800 Video Card $109.99@newegg
Viewsonic Value Series VA2223wm 21.5" $159.99@Newegg (Built in Speakers)
Newegg.com - LG Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM SATA DVD Burner - Bulk - CD / DVD Burners Rly long name theres the link- $27.99@newegg
Cooler Master HAF 932 Full Tower- 139.99@Newegg
Windows 7 Home Premium OEM- $105@Newegg
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total=$1008 (oopsies, $8 Over) Well that didn't work out... So how about replacing that Full Tower with say...
Apevia X-Plorer Midtower-$60 With Blue LEDS, and a built in Fan Controller+Temp Display
now the price is down to... $928 Too low?
Windows 7 Pro OEM, $150
Final price: $973
It's definitely worth the extra money for the Pro OEM, with XP mode and a bunch more, spend the money!
Hope i helped

sorry tcollins, that doesn't look like a "hard-core gamer" build. You went the wrong way with it.

cwolfard, answer druid's question and we'll be happy to further assist.

If you already have monitor, OS, keyboard, mouse, etc you should be able to get a i5 750 build.

Yeah, once you answer the question, someone will get a good build up for you.

Don't go with either of the listed builds. They are weak for $1000 builds that contain no monitor. There seems to be quite a decent amount of new users on the forums atm, which I am really happy about, but they don't always know the best routes to take.

Edit: Well, now I see the second one has a monitor but money could definitely be allocated better to allow for a better gpu. That one is no where near "hardcore."

yah... I'm new, but with a thousand dollar budget it's kind of hard to get much better, especially if you want to buy a monitor, os, etc. I don't know though. Hopefully as time goes by i'll get a bit better with these things. Sorry for the bad advise.
buhbye.
