Default MoBo Help!

Ok, i've done the research on parts. Had someone more knowledgable than me confirm the list. The last thing we can't decide on is which motherboard to go with. They all scare the crap out of me since i'm not exactly an expert and this will be my first build from scratch. Here are the parts

core 2 duo e6600 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115003
quadro FX 1500 video card - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133179
corsair xms2 (2gb x 2) x 2 (4gb) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145034
550watt psu - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371002
case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119068
harddrive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148140

you can probably tell from the videocard that this isn't exactly a gaming PC but more for 3D apps such as Maya, XSI, 3d studio max, and video editing software... but with some games here and there on the side hehe. With my current parts all picked out i've got roughly 280 left in my budget but i wouldn't mind having leftovers if you know what i mean.

Woah Slow down there Jr. Total Budget?

What power supply?
Don't ever go cheap, especially for a workstation.

If you didn't buy it already change it to an Enermax Noise Taker or a 580 Watt Hiper.
Make sure you fill all fan slots that the case provides.

As for the Motherboard, Im guessing you won't want to overclock. But, even so I reccomend a Gigabyte DS3 board. Apparently they overclock well but gigabyte boards also very stable even when your not OCing.
Everything else looks okish..

A gigabyte ds3 or asus p5b-deluxe are good, solid motherboards for the conroes. Not sure what psu you picked out but a 550w is overkill for that system. A froton 450w (prob a 400w is enough but a little room for a better gpu later is good) would be plenty, and use the saved money to get a better gpu like a 7600gt.

oh and 4gb of memory is way overkill and actually slows xp down. I would wait on the extra 2gb until you can get vista. And an e6600 is a sweet processor but do you really need that much power for 3d apps. A e6400 is probably good enough i think, since the 3d apps are more graphics heavy, right?

If you decide to save the money with the froton and e6400, id get a x7950gt and you should be able to play current games and run 3d apps with ease.

edit: don't get an ide hdd, you should get a sata 3gb/s hdd.

the thing is i already have the videocard, i don't want to return it and lose 75 bucks on the restocking fee. And yeah i wasn't expecting the memory to come in handy until Vista, i will hold off on that for now

thanks for the help so far! i'm liking that ds3 board

erm yeah just had the wrong link up there for the HD, fixxed

Nice build.

That Antec PSU is a solid choice as well as Fortron, Enermax or OCZ.

MBoards to choose from:
