If you are going to only have a total of 512 this time around, I suggest getting 2 256 which will allow dual channel. Kingston and Corsair are both good, just look around.

That of course is if his motherboard supports dual channel. If it does, then 2 x 256 if you don't plan on going higher than 512MB. If it doesn't support DC, then get 1 512MB. Corsair over Kingston.

Another question is, Why are you only getting 512? That barely scrapes by as mid range. Is it an extremely low budget upgrade?

Why would it matter if he wants to go higher or stay at 512? He can just get another 2x256 meg sticks. Not rocket science....
