I know that HDMI can carry sound and newer HDMI can even carry multichannel sound but I did not know that DVI could.

yes it can as long as you have a dvi to hdmi adapter (or so i think)

ATI cards though. Most of the cards after the 3000 series will be able to transfer sound through the DVI ports. IF you use the HDMI DVI port that is.

Or you could look for cards with HDMI ports built in.

yeah so DVI alone wouldn't be able to trasnfer sound... so would I be able to transfer sound with a dvi to hdmi adapter on a 7300 GS?

roommate has the asus ati card, same model and everything. it works like a charm for him.
