Looking to build new gaming/software development desktop.

Well you can run 3 monitors on even a crappy low end card, but if you want to run Surround (3 monitors one game) then you'll need more than a single card to tackle that with proper frame rates and settings.

Alright so the build I put together will do what you want within the 1000 limit.

So, like I said, this will do what you want but if you need a storage drive it'll go over your 1000 limit. You could combat some of this cost by dropping the case to a cheaper one like the Corsair 200r and maybe drop the SSD to a 120GB instead. The platform consisting of the motherboard, processor, and RAM will last you the years you want but the GPU won't. If you stick with 1080p the 970 will do you good for a while but on Star Citizen for sure it'll struggle with higher settings. Before you ask what about AMD, the 380x and 390 in the similar price bracket will also do the same. Honestly this would be a good setup to start with and all you would really need is a better GPU down the road maybe when Pascal comes in 2H 2016.

Okay. Thank you PP! Like I said, if I have to go a little over the $1000, I can. That was just a base goal. If spending a little extra will get me better, than it is doable.

I have never had a computer with an SSD. Is going SSD+HDD a good option? Use the HDD for storage of games and such? Is that what you are talking about when you talk about the storage drive? Say if I wanted to add one to the build, what would you recommend? And also, does this allow multiple GPUs? Or will I not have any need for more than one later down the road? Sorry for the stupid question, just getting everything right before I make the jump to buying and building.

And if I remember correctly, been a while since I have done all this, these are able to be overclocked if I want to in the future.

That board does not support SLI. Would have to go a bit more expensive to support dual cards for later like this board.

Yes, more people use a standard HDD for large data storage.

Yes, it supports overclocking as you said you wanted the ability for later.

If you have a little more cash the 980 is the next step up. Both the 970 and 980 are great for 1080p gaming but might still struggle a little at max settings with a couple games out right now.
