Just wondering what you guys thought about the q6600 availability. I want to order my system maybe like August 1st. But I have a bad feeling that the q6600 will be out of stock and the prices won't be $266 as planned just because it's in high demand.

How long do you think we have to wait until the price really drops to $266 and they are plenty of them available??

Are they just lowering prices, or coming out with new, cheaper (i guess to build) models. This is what I got from a web site. Some of the models don't currently exist do they?

whats the point of the e6540 :)

I found the answer to my own question at wikipedia going as follows:

Conroe
Intel is expected to release four additional Core 2 Duo Processors on July 22nd, 2007. The release will coincide with that of the Intel Bearlake (x3x) chipsets. The new processors will be named Core 2 Duo E6550, E6750, and E6850. Processors with a number ending in "50" will have a 1333 MT/s FSB. The processors will all have 4 MiB of L2 cache. Their clock frequency will be similar to that of the already released processors with the same first two digits (E6600, E6700, X6800).[30] These processors are slated to compete with AMD's Stars processor line and are therefore priced below corresponding processors with a 1066 MT/s FSB. An additional model, the E6540, will be launched with specifications similar to the E6550 but lacking Intel Trusted Execution Technology and vPro support. Reported launch prices are as follows:[31]

Core 2 Duo E6x40/E6x50 Series List Prices in Sept. 2, 2007 (per unit, for 1,000 units) Model Clock Speed L2 Cache Quantity FSB Rating Price
Core 2 Duo E6540 2.33 GHz 4 MiB 333 MHz QDR <US$163
Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33 GHz 4 MiB 333 MHz QDR US$163
Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66 GHz 4 MiB 333 MHz QDR US$183
Core 2 Duo E6850 3.00 GHz 4 MiB 333 MHz QDR US$266

With the e6750, you have more overclocking potential, and will do you good regardless. The q6600 has less of an overclocking potential, since quad cores don't overclock as much as dual cores, but it's a quad core. It's more future proof for games, in the future, that will support more cores. I guess it's down to how much you want to spend.

That's my take on it b1gapl. The way I see it I am going for the e6750 and that should do me good for a year or 2 and that's when more games will support multi-core CPUs. Additionally, there will be newer and better quadcore if not the new 8 core processors which will be more appealing. So IMHO, it's better to go with the less expensive highly overclockable dual core and in the future grab the quad or 8 core processors as the gaming industry finally begins to make some headway.

This is by no means the answer for everyone stuck between deciding to go quad or dual cores. It's just my personal take on things. I can save the $90 and get the e6750 and use that cash towards a larger LCD or even towards a 8800GTX. Seems that $90 can be better utilized elsewhere.

won't crysis have quad-core support???
