i7 vs Quad-Core and other questions?

If you don't use your PC for gaming or high end programs then an i7 machine is a waste of money. You could save heaps getting a decent quad or 2 duo machine
Question: I understand the price vs. speed/power with the i7 vs quad core -- and particularly your point when it comes to gaming. But though not a serious gamer, more an engineer, what about the longevity of my equipment. This Pentium 300Mhz Hyper-Threaded machine gave me good service since December of 2005. But I've got to get something new now, and I have a little better budget (maybe $1k - $2k or so). I'd like everything but a monitor (even decent sound). Will a quad core hold me 4 years respectably in the non-gaming world -- or in this case, should I look more seriously toward the i7, longevity being a desire?
Best regards -- and thanks.
