Amen buddy.. AFAIK HD modes are just higher-resolutions, so when my friend thiinks he's so hot trying to lord over me with his 'HD enabled' Xbox 360 i'm like so what we've had Hi-res for years GG.

1280x1024 is basically HD already. You don't need to do anything else, just run games at that resolution. DVDs, however, are only at 640x480, so they'll be stretched to fit your screen. Actual HD video is floating around out there, though. Mostly in the form of trailers, or torrented episodes of HD TV programs if you're a bit unscrupulous.
