Thanks to the advice I got on this forum, I recently purchased all of the parts for a new computer. Please give me a timeframe for how long until part will need to be upgraded (I want to be able to play cutting-edge games).

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice Core
eVGA 256-P2-N376-AX Geforce 6800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16
MSI K8N Neo4-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard
OCZValueSeries2GB(2x1)184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200)
Maxtor DiamondMax200GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150- OEM
Acer AL1714CB-8 Black 17" 8ms LCD Monitor
NEC Black IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3540A - OEM
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16811209018

Thanks!

Cutting-edge games may be quite threatening to that setup. Games are getting more and more graphically intense and need to be fed even more processor power. Seeing the possiblity of overclocking and that you have a socket 939 (can upgrade processor), I'd say 1-1/2 years w/o any upgrade. But don't count on it. There really isn't an accurate timeline to that. Just any day your going to have games that would give even the newer processors a good work out.

So if in a couple years I upgrade to a AMD Athlon 64 FX55 (or equivalent), that should keep me up to date?

In a couple of years the Fx55 won't be much to look at. With all the x2's and plenty of room for improvements, not a very good idea. Don't work backwards. See how far you get with this processor, then make your decision at that time on your new processor. There will be plenty of new processor's which would be faster and almost the same price as the Fx55. Just go with something that you could see would last you at that time and meets your budget.

i say if you want to play all the games on high settings. you should have bought an X2 mobo. but anyways. i would say 1-2 years, but in about a year you should upgrade to an X2 if games support dual core. and pretty much everything else would survive another 2 years, just make sure you OC the processor to around 2.4 is a good aim
