How to apply thermal paste?

How do you put the thermal paste on the CPU? I've heard that you squeeze a rice-grain-sized piece of thermal paste onto the CPU then spread it out evenly over the processor. Others say that you just let the heatsink spread it out gradually over time when it's on the processor.

Also, is your warranty void if you use a different thermal paste then the stuff on the AMD heatsinks already? And you only need thermal paste if you're going to OC, if you're not you can use the thermal pad already on the heatsink?
